Q&A’s

Why count calories?

We all need energy to live, energy comes in many forms - fats, carbohydrates, sugars & proteins. These are all slightly different in their make up, however, they all have a common number which is the calorific value. If we manage our calories in (eating) and our calories out (living / exercising) we can maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What is clean eating?

Following a diet of healthy, nutrient rich foods and avoiding, where possible, processed foods with preservatives and artificial ingredients.

What are Macros?

Short for macro-nutrients, they fall into three main categories, proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Being aware of your macros enables you to stick to the right calories that you need for your body to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Why do we need proteins?

Protein is essential for life and crucial to all cells in the body, playing a key role as enzymes in a cell. After water, protein is the most plentiful substance in the body. Proteins grow, maintain, and replace the tissues in our bodies. Therefore our muscles, organs, and immune systems are mostly made of protein.

Are carbs bad for you?

This is somewhat a myth. Highly refined, processed carbohydrates like sugar, white bread and pastry are if eaten in excess and can cause a number of health risks. However, there are plenty of beneficial carbs like whole grains, vegetables, fruits and pulses that provide us with essential nutrients and fiber.

Which fats are bad for you?

The name fat may make it sound like something you shouldn't eat. But fat is an important part of a healthy diet. Fat from your diet gives you energy. As a bonus, fat in food helps you feel full, so you don't eat too much. Some foods, including most fruits and vegetables, have almost no fat. Other foods have plenty of fat. They include nuts, oils, butter, and meats like beef. There are three types of fat;

Trans fats are also found in certain foods that you buy at the store or get in a restaurant, such as snack foods, cookies and cakes, and fried foods.

Saturated Fat; These fats are found in meat and other animal products, such as butter and cheese, good, as long as you don’t eat too much.

Unsaturated Fat; These are found in plant foods and fish. These fats are good.
